The National Center on Intensive Intervention and the Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports have partnered to present a webinar series focused on providing educators with tools to support secondary students during virtual learning and the return to in-person learning. This series is intended for educators at the state and local level who work with students with intensive behavioral needs in secondary school settings. Webinar 1: Check and Connect: Implementation and Adaptation in a Virtual Environment At the core of Check & Connect is a trusting relationship between the student and a caring, trained mentor who both advocates for and challenges the student to keep education salient. Relationships are more important than ever given that current status of education and ongoing virtual learning.

This module is focused on the foundational skills of basic facts and computations needed for students to be successful in middle school. This module reviews the math trajectories, and explicit, systematic strategies to teach that can lead to long-term success and mastery of facts that can be applied to more advanced, multi-step computations and is an essential component for all tiered interventions.
When a student fails to respond to a validated intervention, teams need to identify why the student is not responding to determine how to adapt the intervention. Diagnostic data can assist teams in this process. They may be used to understand a student’s specific skill deficits and strengths or to identify the environmental events that predict and maintain the student’s problem behavior.
This handout describes three validated goal-setting strategies educators can use to set intervention goals using general outcome measures.
In this webinar, Drs. Kim St. Martin and Sharon Vaughn highlight some key essential practices presented in Intensifying Literacy Instruction: Essential Practices Considerations and will reflect on considerations for implementation. Drs. St. Martin and Vaughn focus on ways educators and educational leaders can increase their capacity to develop skilled readers and writers, identify critical dimensions for designing intervention platforms as the foundation for effective instruction, and adapt interventions to increase the instructional intensity.
Diagnostic tools provide data to assist educators in designing individualized instruction and intensifying intervention for students who do not respond to validated intervention programs. Diagnostic tools can be either informal, which are easy-to-use tools that can be administered with little training, or standardized, which must be delivered in a standard way by trained staff. Teams may find it helpful to initially consider using more informal and easily accessible diagnostic tools and data to avoid loss of instructional time. Standardized diagnostic tools, which require more time to administer and interpret, may be required for students who continually demonstrate a lack of response or who require special education.
This module is focused on the evidence-based strategies necessary for students to be successful in solving word problems. Specific strategies and practice of the strategies to include as part of mathematics intervention are reviewed. NCII developed this resource to help educators better understand the purpose of and considerations surrounding behavior screening in schools. Educators can use the information on this resource in conjunction with the Behavior Screening Tools Chart to (a) design a screening process for their school and (b) select or evaluate screening tools.
In this video, Dr. Lynn Fuchs, Nicholas Hobbs Professor of Special Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University and Senior Advisor to the National Center on Intensive Intervention, shares advice regarding access to the general education curriculum for students with disabilities.
This webinar models how practitioners can use data-based individualization (DBI) to develop and implement specially designed instruction (SDI) for students with disabilities.
