DBI is a research-based process for individualizing and intensifying interventions through the systematic use of assessment data, validated interventions, and research-based adaptation strategies. DBI is the technical term for what many good teachers do naturally through the problem solving process: frequently review student data and make changes to their teaching based on what works for students. DBI, however, makes this process systematic, explicit, and tailored to meet the needs of individual students through a multi-step process that gradually intensifies instruction and support.

These professional learning training materials are intended to assist district or school teams involved in initial planning or implementation of data-based individualization (DBI) as a framework for providing intensive intervention in academics and behavior. The modules listed below provide an overview of the DBI process and more in-depth exploration of the various components of DBI.
In this webinar, experts from the PROGRESS Center and National Center on Intensive Intervention (NCII) model how practitioners can use data-based individualization (DBI) to develop and implement SDI for students with disabilities and a panel of special educators share how using DBI improved the efficiency and effectiveness of their service delivery, communication with families, and collaboration with other educators.
Data-based individualization (DBI) is a research-based process for individualizing and intensifying interventions through the systematic use of assessment data, validated interventions, and research-based adaptation strategies. This document introduces and describes the DBI process and how it can be used to support students who require intensive intervention in academics and/or behavior.
Data-based individualization (DBI) is a research-based process for individualizing and intensifying interventions through the systematic use of assessment data, validated interventions, and research-based adaptation strategies. The DBI process includes five iterative steps:
Using DBI to Improve Literacy Outcomes for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
How can data-based individualization (DBI) help educators to address the growing expectations for literacy outcomes for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities? In this webinar, Dr. Chris Lemons an NCII Advisor, Associate Professor of Special Education in the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University, and Co-Director of the Stanford Down Syndrome Research Center, provides an overview of activities conducted through an Office of Special Education Programs model demonstration project. This project focused on increased literacy outcomes using DBI, inclusion, and enhancing individualized education programs. The webinar shares project findings and provides recommendations for integrating those findings into professional development and practice to improve student outcomes.
Master Progress Monitoring Assessment: Join Our Exclusive 4-Part Virtual Workshop Series! Are you ready to enhance your progress monitoring skills and learn to use data to drive meaningful outcomes for your students? Join National Center on Intensive Intervention (NCII) experts for the first two sessions of our four-part virtual workshop series to master progress monitoring assessment techniques, a key component of the data-based individualization (DBI) process essential for tailoring instruction to individual learner needs.Joining the 101 Workshop Series is your first step toward mastering progress monitoring. This workshop series will ground you in the essentials of progress monitoring and prepare you to effectively integrate this assessment strategy into the DBI process.
