If you are like most educators, you agree with the idea of providing intensive intervention for students with the most intractable academic and behavior problems. The question you may be asking is, how do I find the time? This guide includes strategies that educators can consider when trying to determine how to find the time for this intensification within the constraints of busy school schedules. Supplemental resources, planning questions, and example schedules are also provided.

Teachers often note that students struggle with the transition between core instruction and intervention in mathematics. Thus, the purpose of these curriculum crosswalks is to identify points of alignment and misalignment between commonly used mathematics intervention and core instructional materials, with a particular focus on mathematics practice standards and vocabulary. We offer recommendations for improving alignment to help students more successfully participate in math instruction across settings. The purpose of this module is to review how to implement the Early Numeracy Intervention, a validated intervention program that can be used for Tier 2 math intervention, or as an intensive intervention platform within DBI.
NCII’s Faculty Professional Learning Series is an opportunity for teacher preparation faculty and professional development providers to learn from colleagues and NCII experts about available tools and resources to enhance coursework, field experiences, and professional development opportunities related to intensive intervention. Webinar 1: Preparing Teachers to Deliver Intervention in Virtual Settings This webinar presented five practical strategies for adapting preparation and professional learning experiences to help teachers develop skills for delivering intensive intervention in virtual settings.
This module was adapted from a series of training modules developed by the National Center on Intensive Intervention (NCII) and is aimed at district or school teams involved in the initial planning for using data-based individualization (DBI) as a framework for providing intensive intervention in academics and behavior. The audience for this module may include school teams supporting academic intervention and progress monitoring in middle school mathematics.
Module 2 of the Intensive Intervention in Mathematics Course Content focuses on the assessment components of intensive intervention. We provide an overview of assessments before diving into instruction in order to stress the importance that intensive intervention cannot occur without adequate assessments in place.
This collection of training materials can be used to provide an overview of the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity for selecting, evaluating, and intensifying interventions or to provide specific examples in reading, mathematics, and behavior. The training materials include presentation slides with suggested speaker notes and workbooks with application activities. The modules are intended to be delivered by a trained, knowledgeable professional.
This collection contains modules that can be used for professional development for middle school leaders, teachers, interventionists and instructional coaches to build their capacity to students who require intervention in mathematics. In this video, Dr. Sharon Vaughn, Senior Advisor to the National Center on Intensive Intervention and the Executive Director of The Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk, discusses intensive academic interventions and supplies up to date information about the status of research studies on the subject.
NCII, through a collaboration with the University of Connecticut and the National Center on Leadership in Intensive Intervention and with support from the CEEDAR Center, developed course content focused on enhancing educators’ skills in explicit instruction, intensive mathematics intervention, behavior support and intensive reading intervention.
