These professional learning training materials are intended to assist district or school teams involved in initial planning or implementation of data-based individualization (DBI) as a framework for providing intensive intervention in academics and behavior. The modules listed below provide an overview of the DBI process and more in-depth exploration of the various components of DBI.

In this Voices from the Field post, Emma Shanahan reflects on her experiences with progress monitoring and data-based decision making as a teacher and shares findings from her recent research on DBI professional development.
Since 2018 the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has partnered with NCII to build capacity and infrastructure to support DBI implementation.
Successful implementation of a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) and, specifically, intensive intervention through the data-based individualization (DBI) process, demands the collection and analysis of data. As teams consider data collection, challenges may occur with assessment administration, scoring, and data entry (Taylor, 2009). This resource reviews three data collection and entry challenges and strategies to ensure data about risk status and responsiveness accurately represent student performance and minimize measurement errors.
These videos and tips are part of a series of products to support students with intensive needs in the face of COVID-19. These videos illustrate how parents and grandparents can implement the NCII reading and mathematics sample lessons to provide additional practice. In addition to the video examples, a tip sheet is available to help parents implement the lessons. Implementation of Reading Lesson: Parent Example
This series of lessons from the State Implementation and Scaling-up of Evidence-based Practices (SISEP) Center highlights a research driven approach to coaching. The series begins with an overview lesson and includes additional lessons that cover how to deliver effective and efficient prompting, performance feedback, and scaffolding and using data to identify recipients current phase of learning. A coaching practice profile is also available.
The purpose of this document is to provide content-specific examples of how to structure educator-level and/or systems-level coaching as a mechanism to ensure ongoing professional learning to support tiered intervention. This document provides examples of coaching supports, models, and functions within the context of tiered intervention (e.g., RtI, PBIS, MTSS) and data-based decision making (e.g., data-based individualization [DBI]) for educators who already have foundational knowledge and/or experience with coaching.
In Module 8 of the Intensive Intervention in Mathematics Course Content we highlight the necessity for implementing evidence-based practices with fidelity. We also explain how to make adaptations to the instructional platform when students demonstrate inadequate progress. We finish this module by putting all the information learned across modules together with the intensive intervention framework.
Teams are a vital part of an effective multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) across both academics and behavior as well as special education. Making connections across the across the various teams used in MTSS and special education can be challenging. This resource from NCII and the PBIS Center, provides information about how DBI can support IEP implementation and provides a table with key considerations for teams working across the MTSS system.
In this video, Dr. Jade Wexler, Assistant Professor of Special Education at the University of Maryland, College Park discusses research and implementation challenges for implementing interventions to support students academically and behaviorally within incarcerated settings.
