In this article, school psychologist Kelly Glick shares about the role school psychologists play in implementing intensive intervention through a data-based individualization (DBI) process and how implementing DBI has impacted her district.
NCII was excited to host the inaugural Intensive Intervention Institute: Building Knowledge and Capacity for Faculty, State, and District Leaders on June 27-28, 2023. The two-day in person Intensive Intervention Institute aimed to build the knowledge and capacity of state and local leaders and teacher preparation faculty to support implementation of intensive intervention for students with severe and persistent learning and/or social, emotional, or behavioral needs using data-based individualization (DBI).
Successful implementation of intensive intervention using data-based individualization (DBI) is more likely to occur in schools that have a well-functioning tiered system of support, commonly called a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS), response to intervention (RTI), or positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS), depending on your location and area of focus. Intensive intervention is considered the most intense level of intervention and also may be known as Tier 3.
NCII is excited to host our second Intensive Intervention Institute! This year the Institute aims to build the knowledge and capacity of state and local leaders to support the implementation of intensive intervention for students with severe and persistent learning and/or social, emotional, or behavioral needs using data-based individualization (DBI).
This collection highlights a sampling of articles focused on intensive intervention and data-based individualization (DBI). Although there is a wealth of research on key components of the DBI process (e.g., progress monitoring, validated intervention programs), this list is not intended to include articles that focus on specific steps in the DBI process, nor is it an exhaustive review of all available literature. In the list below, we highlight seminal research on DBI and articles published since 2011, when NCII was first funded.
After initial data-based individualization (DBI) implementation, schools and districts need to own the work and deliver ongoing support, including supports for new teachers within existing budgets and staff time. Planning for sustainability upfront can help district leaders to streamline their implementation efforts. In New York City, Jason Borges and Meghan Duffy from the New York City Department of Education have found several successful strategies for DBI implementation that have helped make DBI self-sustaining. This audio story shares their DBI implementation approach, successes, and lessons learned about sustainability. The recording is broken into three parts.
The purpose of this document is to provide an overview of the Center’s accomplishments and to highlight a set of lessons learned from the 26 schools that implemented intensive intervention while receiving technical support from the Center.
