This planning guide may be used for planning short intervention activities, review and practice activities, or progress monitoring checks. During school closures, we learned that virtual intervention does not look the same as face-to-face intervention. Parent support and planning are going to be the key to helping our students who have difficulties with reading and mathematics. For educators or parents, part of this support includes simple ways to monitor student progress.

This series of videos provides brief instructional examples for supporting students who need intensive instruction in the area of fractions. Within college- and career-ready standards fractions are typically taught in Grades 3-5. Developing an understanding of fractions as numbers includes part/whole relationship, number on the number line, equivalent fractions, whole numbers as fractions, and comparing fractions These videos may be used as these concepts are introduced, or with students in higher grade levels who continue to struggle with the concepts. Special education teachers, math interventionists, and others working with struggling students may find these videos helpful.
These resources were created by Patricia Maxwell from Coventry Public Schools in Rhode Island to help with virtual mathematics instruction and intervention. The long-term goal is for students to fluently and automatically know addition facts. Manipulatives, including fingers, help students to be accurate, which is a precursor of fluency and automaticity. To meet this goal, students use manipulatives and learn strategies on how to put together numbers, which improves their “number sense.” The handouts below cover the use of ten frames, number lines, and rekenreks. Example videos are linked in the resource.

This video illustrates the use of manipulatives to help students practice solving story problems that require the use of counting skills such as correspondence, cardinality, and counting on. When students practice solving story problems with manipulatives, they are able to apply mathematics skills, such as counting, in a real-world context. The application of strategies and skills in a real-world context makes learned mathematics knowledge meaningful.
This video illustrates the use of manipulatives to help students practice comparing quantities that are grouped as tens and ones. When numbers are represented with manipulatives organized as tens and ones, students develop a concrete understanding for using place value to comparing quantities. Students also benefit from multiple opportunities to talk about mathematics and use appropriate mathematics vocabulary such as “greater than” and “less than.”
An effective and efficient data system is essential for successful implementation of a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS). However, prior to selecting an appropriate system, schools and districts must identify what its staff and community need and what resources the district or school has to support an MTSS data system. This two-step tool can help teams to consider both what their needs are and to evaluate available tools against those needs. Step 1 can help your team systematically identify and document your MTSS data system needs and current context and step 2 focuses on selecting and evaluating a data system for conducting screening and progress monitoring within a tiered system of support based on the identified needs and context from step 1
