The National Center on Intensive Intervention and the Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports have partnered to present a webinar series focused on providing educators with tools to support secondary students during virtual learning and the return to in-person learning. This series is intended for educators at the state and local level who work with students with intensive behavioral needs in secondary school settings. Webinar 1: Check and Connect: Implementation and Adaptation in a Virtual Environment At the core of Check & Connect is a trusting relationship between the student and a caring, trained mentor who both advocates for and challenges the student to keep education salient. Relationships are more important than ever given that current status of education and ongoing virtual learning.

This lesson provides a structure for writing intervention with examples of asynchronous and synchronous virtual delivery. The lesson is informed by the Simple View of Writing (Berninger & Amtmann, 2002) and it covers the three major components of writing instruction: transcription, text generation, and self-regulation. In this webinar presenters reviewed the evidence-base behind explicit instruction for students with disabilities and highlighted recently released course content designed to help educators learn how to deliver explicit instruction and review their current practices.
At-home learning requires increased independence for students. With no bells signaling the beginning or end of class and no teacher leading the class for each subject, students must follow a virtual schedule. Within these schedules, students are responsible for accessing the appropriate links to class sessions and work activities. In addition, students often must populate usernames and passwords—most of which are unique for each different site or task.
Data teams serve multiple roles in the data-based individualization (DBI) process and across a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS). Although schools may have multiple teams that review different types of data across a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS), the intensive intervention or DBI team is focused on the needs of individual students who are not making progress in their current intervention or special education program. It is critical that these meetings are driven by data, occur regularly, and use an efficient, consistent process that allows participants to review progress and make intervention decisions for students. NCII has created a series of tools to help teams establish efficient and effective individual student data meetings.

This series includes video examples and tip sheets to help educators and families in using the NCII reading and mathematics sample lessons to support students with intensive needs. These lessons provide short instructional routines to encourage multiple practice opportunities using explicit instruction principles. The videos and tip sheets describe how educators can use the sample lessons to support instruction in a virtual setting, how educators can share these lessons with parents, and how parents can also implement the lessons to provide additional practice opportunities.
This video demonstrates how to use fraction tiles to explore how fractions such as 4/4 are equivalent to 1. Before fractions are introduced in the curriculum, students use integers, which only have one value associated with the numeral or number word. Fractions may be the first time that students are introduced to the possibility that the same quantity can be represented with different representations, such as one whole and four fourths. Using models allows students to practice finding equivalent fractions, which is a prerequisite skill for performing computation with fractions.
