This toolkit provides activities and resources to assist practitioners in designing and delivering intensive interventions in reading and mathematics for K–12 students with significant learning difficulties and disabilities. Grounded in research, this toolkit is based on the Center on Instruction’s Intensive Interventions for Students Struggling in Reading and Mathematics: A Practice Guide, and includes the following resources:

In Module 3 of the Intensive Intervention in Mathematics Course Content we emphasize the necessity for using evidence-based interventions or strategies as the starting point of instruction within intensive intervention. In this module, educators will learn about: (1) The umbrella term of evidence-based practices and different types of evidence-based practices; (2) Where to locate evidence-based practices; (3) How to design the instructional platform for use within intensive intervention.
Teams are a vital part of an effective multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) across both academics and behavior as well as special education. Making connections across the across the various teams used in MTSS and special education can be challenging. This resource from NCII and the PBIS Center, provides information about how DBI can support IEP implementation and provides a table with key considerations for teams working across the MTSS system.
This module is focused on the evidence-based strategies necessary for students to be successful in solving word problems. Specific strategies and practice of the strategies to include as part of mathematics intervention are reviewed. In Module 5 of the Intensive Intervention in Mathematics Course Content we focus on three instructional strategies teachers should embed within every intensive intervention session. We rely on a strong research base for these recommendations about fluency, problem solving, and motivation.
This module is focused on the foundational skills of basic facts and computations across elementary grade levels. This module reviews the math trajectories that lead to long-term success and mastery of facts. Mastery of facts will lead to deeper understanding of facts in order to complete multi-step computations.
In this video, Sarah Powell, Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Texas at Austin, discusses key considerations when teaching students with math difficulty.
Module 4 of the Intensive Intervention in Mathematics Course Content focuses on the delivery of the instructional platform. We rely on evidence-based strategies to inform how teachers should deliver the instructional platform.
Teachers often note that students struggle with the transition between core instruction and intervention in mathematics. Thus, the purpose of these curriculum crosswalks is to identify points of alignment and misalignment between commonly used mathematics intervention and core instructional materials, with a particular focus on mathematics practice standards and vocabulary. We offer recommendations for improving alignment to help students more successfully participate in math instruction across settings. This module is focused on the foundational skills of basic facts and computations needed for students to be successful in middle school. This module reviews the math trajectories, and explicit, systematic strategies to teach that can lead to long-term success and mastery of facts that can be applied to more advanced, multi-step computations and is an essential component for all tiered interventions.
