Intensive Intervention: What it is, Who it's For, and Why it's Important?

Current education accountability initiatives require that all students make progress toward academic proficiency standards, including students with disabilities who often have challenging learning needs.  In honor of Learning Disabilities/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Disability Awareness Month, the directors from two Centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) and National Center for Special Education Research (NCSER) discussed how intensive intervention can help these students make progress. Dr. Lou Danielson and Dr. Rebecca Zumeta Edmonds from OSEP’s National Center on Intensive Intervention (NCII), and Drs. Lynn and Doug Fuchs from NCSER’s  Accelerating the Academic Achievement of Students with Learning Disabilities Research Initiative (A3 Initiative) describe the intensive intervention process, methods of identifying students not making adequate academic progress, and some of their recent research findings. Information about implementation support resources available through NCII were also provided.
